@BottletreeCafe: Tinnarose w/ Kate Tucker & @SonsofSweden / @LaurenKrothe Thu 11/20 - @tinnarosemusic

Austin sextet Tinnarose is making their Birmingham debut next week with a show at The Bottletree on Thursday, November 20. Doors are at 9pm. Tickets are $8 adv. and $10 dos. Nashville band Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden and local Lauren Krothe are also on the bill.

In support of their self-titled debut album, Austin-based indie folk-rock band and KUTX’s inaugural Artist of the Month TINNAROSE is gearing up to break boundaries and take their stunning live show on the road in November. In celebration of their introductory tour, the band along with director Lauren Pruitt recently filmed a psychedelic-infused video for their remarkable single “When You’re Gone”. “The song, “When You’re Gone” is pulsing and alive and we wanted the video to reflect that energy,” explains vocalist Devon McDermott.

Tinnarose has been on the road this week promoting their self-titled debut that came out this Fall to critical acclaim:
"Freaky Good Folk: I hear Nilsson in their pitch, and the pinched, acute licks of Walter Becker‘s guitar in classic Steely Dan, and Sandy Denny‘s (Fairport Convention) voice, and a host of other amazing sounds."  - Greg Vandy, KEXP, American Standard Time

"Tinnarose is a singer-songwriter showcase of the highest order. (Devon McDermott's) take on "Willie O'Winsbury is a strong candidate for Song Of The Year, the sort of thing that may make the hairs on the back of your neck stand at attention. It's simply breathtaking, and it's clear that we have a new talent worthy of our laurels on our hands here." - Pop Matters

"(4 stars) As far as first impressions go, Tinnarose have absolutely killed it." - Prelude Press

"Refreshing and adventurous pop music." - Peter Blackstock, Austin American-Statesman

was recorded on a horse farm in Driftwood, TX by engineer Barrett Walton, and mixed by Grammy-winner Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, Jack White, Modest Mouse).

Tinnarose were also KUTX Artists Of The Month for August here in Austin.

Seattle-born, Nashville-based Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden
You may have heard them on Birmingham Mountain Radio, with their dream-pop single “Blue Hotel” topping the charts.

Earlier this year, KT+SOS launched what Huffington Post called “a highly ambitious Kickstarter project” to record and release a full length album on vinyl and CD with a music video and short film to accompany each song.

The band just finished up a full U.S. tour in support of the new album and are currently in Nashville working on an EP to be released in spring 2015.

Lauren Krothe :
The singer and composer known as Lauren Krothe has released her long-awaited debut album, 'Child of Babylon.' This LP - funded by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign - serves as a moving, evocative introduction to this wonderfully creative chanteuse and songwriter. Krothe sings with the power and elegance of a classically trained mezzo-soprano, capable also of climbing into the soprano register with ease and grace. She is colorfully dramatic without wilting into melodrama. She composes and plays piano with a minimalist's ear, often showing startlingly impeccable taste. Her lyrics are highly poetic, her lines wildly intelligent and charged with character.

Krothe came up through the gothic/industrial scene, her previous work with the bands Panzer AG and Aesthetic Perfection being among her most notable. She has, however, been writing her own music for decades, and has accumulated a repertoire of approximately 100 songs for vocals and piano.

@BSHQ- Bloodshot Records Signs @Banditosband : see them- (11/22 @ALTheatre w/ Blackberry Smoke 11/28 @BottletreeCafe)

Back in March we saw Nashville-via-Birmingham, AL group Banditos ( at one of those fly-by-night, hole-in-the-wall bars that sprout like skunkweed on Sixth Street in Austin, TX during the height of SXSW crazy. The sound system at this place was a painful mix of all treble and reverb; and the noises oozing out of the PA during another band's set were not unlike the distorted echoes of the soundtrack to Suspiria (and not in a good way). We wish we were kidding.

Then the six-piece Banditos took the stage, and even though they themselves were a little intimidating - all hair, denim, and stoic determination - the sounds they managed to conjure from two overworked speakers were fresh, raw, and spectacular. We were instantly blown away and are now thrilled to announce Banditos have signed with Bloodshot Records and will release a new album sometime in early 2015.

With the rugged power of a flashy Super Chief locomotive, the Banditos bodaciously appropriate elements of '60s blues-fused acid rock, ZZ Top's jangly boogie, the Drive-By Truckers' yawp, the populist choogle of CCR, Slim Harpo's hip shake baby groove, gut bucket Fat Possum hill country mojo and the Georgia Motherfucking Satellites. From backwoods bluegrass, to slinky nods to Muscle Shoals soul and unexpected bits of doo-wop sweetness, the Banditos recall many, but sound like no one but themselves.

The band is currently on tour and will likely soon be playing a town near you. Check here ( for more information.

The reggae/rock band Ballyhoo! has released their newest EP "The Cool Down: Vol 1," today via Right Coast Records! Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Mike Stebe in Orlando, FL, the EP features three new tracks, as well as three variations on older ones. Download "The Cool Down: Vol 1" now on iTunes, here: Ballyhoo! is currently on tour with Tribal Seeds as a part of the fall Representing Tour, also featuring Gonzo with Beyond I Sight. For more information on the EP and all upcoming tour dates, please visit

On "The Cool Down: Vol 1," lead singer Howi Spangler explains: "With 'The Cool Down,' we wanted to bring back that laid back vibe we had in our pre-'Daydreams' releases. It turned out to be even more chill than we went for and we love it. I had written some songs that were different than our current sound and then we also thought it would be cool to take a few old favorites and bring them to that level. 'Evil Penguin (Frontline)' really sounds epic in this new way. The message from this EP as a whole, even down to the artwork, is to take the listener to a happy place after that long work day or whatever stressful situation they're in. Just to 'cool down' and have a beer by our sonic beach."

Ballyhoo! recently announce the 4th and final installment of "Take It Easy" as part of their Songshare program with the New York Rock Exchange. Purchasers will receive an alternate version of Ballyhoo!'s song "Take it Easy" accompanied by a silver or gold certificate and a royalty check made out to you. As a special offer, NYRE has offered to give anyone who buys the "Take it Easy" Songshare a copy of the band's new EP "The Cool Down: Vol 1" for free! For more information, please visit:

This past summer Ballyhoo! released their three-track EP Halo, which featured the band's cover of Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song" and served as a follow-up to Ballyhoo!'s 5th studio album Pineapple Grenade. The band independently released the album on their own record label, Right Coast Records, in the summer of 2013 and broke through the Billboard Top 200 at #189 as well as reaching #4 Billboard Heatseekers and #5 at iTunes Alternative charts.

Pineapple Grenade features the single "No Good," produced by Rome Ramirez (Sublime with Rome) and mixed by Paul Leary (U2, Sublime). The band followed up the single release with a sultry video premiere on The video was directed by Wes "Wuz Good" Armstrong (B.o.B, T-Pain, Flo Rida).

The first single "Run" saw an early radio add from KRAB Bakersfield and early radio spins by KROQ Los Angeles, WHFS Baltimore, KTCL Denver, and KCXX Riverside among others. Alongside the album release, BALLYHOO! co-headlined the 2013 Summer Sickness Tour with Authority Zero. Pineapple Grenade is the band's follow-up to the 2011 LAW Records release of "Daydreams," which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Reggae Charts and #4 on Amazon.

Between the road and the studio, BALLYHOO! have crafted a sound distinctly their own; fresh, fun, and embodied by the soul of the party lifestyle. Lead singer and guitarist, Howi Spangler, has a reputation for mixing slick lyrics with his smooth but powerful voice. Drummer Donald Spangler lays out the hard-hitting beats. Scott Vandrey layers in the finishing touches to the band's signature sound on keys. The band recently welcomed Nick Lucera as their new bass player.

Ballyhoo!'s new EP The Cool Down is now available on iTunes, here:

Modern Dance: "Trip the Light" @Sanspointe Dance Company Fri Nov 14 7:30 PM w/ Eric Yow - @RogueYow and more - see link

Sanspointe Dance Company announces the line-up of new dance,
music and video created by local and national artists in their upcoming concert entitled, Trip the Light. The company has invited Eric Yow of the Orlando-based troupe Yow Dance and Lynda White from Denver to set repertory pieces on them. They have also included Linze McRae from the Downtown Dance Conservatory in Gadsden, AL to collaborate with Artistic Director, Taryn Packheiser Brown, on a dance for the camera media project. Rounding out the performance are new dances by company members Sara Turney, Chelsea Henderson and Brown. Music Director, Justin Wallace, will also premier two audio compositions in conjunction with the aforementioned works of art.

The title Trip the Light comes from the metaphor of a light representing an inchoate idea or form that needs to be ripened in order to come to fruition. Brown also stated “it represents the physical footlights that once lined the front of old vaudeville stages.” “There will be a loose theme of both the presence/absence of technology within the overall design of the show. However, each piece stands on its own and the concert can be approached as an evening of several small works contributed by various artists.” Repertory pieces for the show include Eric Yow’s Purcell, a classical modern dance set to baroque music by Henry Purcell and Lynda Whites’ Punchy Muffle, a humorous dance theater piece with edgy music by Greg Tanner Harris. The company hopes to show their wide range of contemporary dance abilities by performing these disparate works from national guest artists.

Sanspointe is thankful to be working with Linze McRae and the Downtown Dance Conservatory on Demeter’s Folly, a new work made for video. The piece was shot on the banks of the Coosa River, Broad Street Bridge and the Martin Wildlife Park in Gadsden, AL. McRae collaborated with Brown on the choreography and artistic design for the piece. The dance is based on the story of Persephone and her betrothal to Hades, but from the perspective of her mother, Demeter. Sara Turney will present a new solo, which she describes as “soft, reaching, lifting, (with) wings.” Chelsea Henderson’s female trio utilizes large stage props and diaphanous decorative skirts and original music by Wallace. Taryn Packheiser Brown premiers a new solo with experimental sound and video projections.

Trip the Light was made possible by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets for the concert are $15 and can be purchased at Performances will take place on November 14th and 15th at 7:30pm and November 16th at 2pm at the CDF Studio Theatre at 1715 27th Court South, Homewood, AL 35209. The show will be general seating.

Musicians for @_IWW Union Info Meeting, Daniel Day Gallery, Nov 22nd 3 pm

This will be an informational meeting about the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Working musicians in Birmingham: there will be an informational meeting about the IWW at Daniel Day Gallery, on November 22nd at 3 pm.

Daniel Day Gallery and DreamMecca Studio
3025 6th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233
(205) 731-9420

About the IWW(from their website)

"The IWW is a member-run union for all workers, a union dedicated to organizing on the job, in our industries and in our communities. IWW members are organizing to win better conditions today and build a world with economic democracy tomorrow. We want our workplaces run for the benefit of workers and communities rather than for a handful of bosses and executives.
"We are the Industrial Workers of the World because we organize industrially.

"This means we organize all workers producing the same goods or providing the same services into one union, rather than dividing workers by skill or trade, so we can pool our strength to win our demands together. Since the IWW was founded in 1905, we have made significant contributions to the labor struggles around the world and have a proud tradition of organizing across gender, ethnic and racial lines - a tradition begun long before such organizing was popular.

"We invite you to become a member whether or not the IWW happens to have representation rights in your workplace. We organize the worker, not the job, and recognize that unions are not about government certification or employer recognition but about workers coming together to address common concerns.
Sometimes this means refusing to work with dangerous equipment and chemicals.

"Sometimes it means striking or signing a contract. Other times it mean agitating around particular issues or grievances in a workplace or industry.

"The IWW is a democratic, member-run union. That means members decide what issues to address, and which tactics to use and we directly vote on office holders, from stewards to national offices. Why wait? Join the IWW and organize for a better future."

Brooklyn, NY - October 29, 2014 - Brooklyn singer/songwriter Alexz Johnson premiered the live studio video for "Let 'Em Eat Cake" today with Culture Collide! The song is also the title track of her recently released full-length album Let 'Em Eat Cake, which was produced by David Kahne (Stevie Nicks, Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen). Alexz premiered her song "Let 'Em Eat Cake" with The Wall Street Journal:

Alexz Johnson is an independent Canadian singer/songwriter and actress based in Brooklyn, NY. With a unique soulful folk-pop sound and passionate songwriting style, it's no wonder Alexz Johnson has been called a modern day Stevie Nicks with the vocal style of Aretha Franklin. In support of her new album, Alexz is on a Fall tour that will kick off October 16th in Boston, MA and wrap on December 6th in Philadelphia.

Johnson's success in TV and film as young adult (Instant Star, So Weird, Final Destination 3) not only landed her a Gemini Award (Canadian Emmy) in 2008, but also helped her garner a massive grassroots fan following. In the absence of traditional support, Alexz has continued to build a strong following in an independent market. Deciding to release her Skipping Stone EP through Kickstarter, over $67,000 was raised overall allowing her to tour 17 cities with her band across the US and Canada. Earlier this year, Alexz's fans once again showed their support when she raised over $50,000 on PledgeMusic to produce her HEART EP and her newest full-length, Let 'Em Eat Cake.

Born and raised in Canada, the middle child of nine siblings, Alexz began writing songs with her brother Brendan at the age of 12. After writing for and portraying musicians in multiple Canadian films and TV shows, Alexz began to experiment with her own unique pop/soul sound. This attracted the attention of major labels, signing first to Capitol Records in 2005 and Epic/Sony in 2008 (completing a full length record with legendary producer Greg Wells). Due to internal changes, the album never got its proper release.

In 2012, Alexz's release of "Walking" premiered on MTV Buzzworthy and by the end of the year, landed her on Billboard's "Uncharted to Watch" list. Alexz's songs have been featured in the likes of Instant Star, Degrassi (including the theme song for season 11), Pretty Little Liars, The L.A. Complex, and most recently in Season Three of WIGS series, BLUE, produced by Jon Avnet, directed by Rodrigo Garcia, and starring Julia Stiles. Johnson wrote and composed the music for the season, and also plays the girlfriend of Jane O'Hara's character in this award-winning series. Alexz Johnson released Let 'Em Eat Cake on October 14th, 2014.

@TheOtherDayBand - Debut Performance at The Syndicate Lounge Nov 7th

November 7th, 2014 (10PM)

The Other Day
Opening for In Sonitus Lux (ATL) and Them Natives (B'ham), The Other Day promises to deliver an intriguing mix of rhythmic textures and potent lyrics within the realms of Nu Jazz, Alt Pop, Bossa Nova, and Blues.

A divine segue to precede two fiery and mesmerizing experimental performance groups, The Other Day's grooves are are robust and provocative--some warm and mellow, some dark and punchy, and some with a reverent flavor of Memphis Blues and Soul, Southern Classic Rock, Reggae, early 20th century music and even French cabaret.

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, their music is the sort of thing you might imagine at a posh California soiree, while in the distance, beatnik musicians softly play around a bonfire on the beach below.

The main event features In Sonitus Lux, "a new project from Stickfigure records with recording artist, Serson Brannen. Best known for his award winning avant-garde electronic/spoken word project called The Subliminator, Brannen has taken an entirely new and different direction with a very new and very different instrument, The Hang. In Sonitus Lux is an ever-evolving free improv ensemble of musicians, performers and other artists. By design, in a constant state of flux but always in the moment, original and electric. To attend an In Sonitus Lux performance is to witness the moment of sonic art's creation."

Them Natives - With "genre-bending exploration" and "melodic harmonies," their album, Alabama Bound, is described as "a lo-fi séance blending nightmarish adrenalin with a calming, psychedelic rejection of the primordial fight or flight instinct."

SURELY you're curious?! Satisfy that curiosity and make a date to hear a fascinating lineup that promises to entertain your intellectual ears.

Be The Sandwich

Click on the monster for a fun surprise, then shake the phallusey thing there.

@CoryBranan at WorkPlay Theatre Wednesday, November 19 8 PM | $20 w/ @JustinTEarle

The songs do all the convincing on his new album The No-Hit Wonder. There’s a timeless craftsmanship in these deceptively simple songs about love and home, losses and dreams. Branan’s had his fair share of each since completing his critically acclaimed Bloodshot debut MUTT in 2012, losing several beloved family members, getting married, and having two kids. He spent all this time touring heavily with artists across the spectrum, including The Gaslight Anthem and Jason Isbell (who appears here on “You Make Me” and “The Highway Home”). The pull of settling down and push of life’s unavoidable unsettlings inform much of the new record, which navigates the lows while celebrating the highs with fresh urgency.

The No-Hit Wonder - song and album - is both a celebratory anthem of the world-weary, undefeated underdogs of the world, and a coming to terms with the cards life has dealt you. While the title track may sound autobiographical, it was written for fellow troubadours “living blood to string/hand to mouth.” And when the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn and Steve Selvidge join in singing “it is what it is/blood to string,” it becomes everybody’s fight.

For his fourth album Branan called on a who’s who cast of heroes and no-hit-wonder peers to flash up the proceedings. Finn and Selvidge of the Hold Steady, Isbell, Caitlin Rose and Austin Lucas (“All the Rivers in Colorado”), and Tim Easton (“Sour Mash”) all lend their voices to the cause, while some of Nashville’s finest players - Audley Freed (The Black Crowes), John Radford (Justin Townes Earle, Luella and The Sun), Sadler Vaden (The 400 Unit, Drivin and Cryin), and Robbie “The Man of Steel” Turner (Waylon Jennings, Charlie Rich) - hammer the damn thing home.

Justin Townes Earle:

Once compared to a man who wears many suits, in thirty-two short years Justin Townes Earle has experienced more than most, both personally and professionally. Between releasing four full-length-critically-acclaimed albums, constant touring, multiple stints in rehab, a new found sobriety, being born Steve Earle’s son, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life, it’s safe to say JTE has quite the story to tell. His fifth album (and first ever on Vagrant Records) serves as the perfect platform for such narrations.

Entitled Single Mothers, the album is comprised of ten tracks that showcase exactly why Justin Townes Earle is considered a forefather of Contemporary Americana. As a recently married, sober man JTE writes from a point of maturity and content we’ve not seen before on past records. “One day I just realized it’s not cool to die young, and it’s even less cool to die after 30,” Justin states as he reflects on a life past and his newly found clarity. What he’s created is an album that’s raw, honest and personal in a way he hasn’t touched upon since his debut EP, Yuma.

TOUR ALERT: The Farewell Drifters @ WorkPlay Theatre November 22 -- @farewelldrifter

"With their acoustic instrumentation and the anthemic thrust of their songwriting, the Farewell Drifters find themselves in the midst of what’s bound to go down in the annals of popular music history as an era-defining, youthful folk-rock boom. But the Drifters aren’t content simply to stomp, strum and sing with gusto. They bring a unique Brian Wilson-like sensibility to the movement, with intricately arranged harmonies and atmospheric, string-swathed studio shading that is newly showcased on Tomorrow Forever, the quartet’s first album for their new label Compass Records. Collaborating with roots pop producer Neilson Hubbard (Matthew Perryman Jones, the Apache Relay) helped solidify the band’s voice, elevating their crystalline harmonies and acoustic foundation with gutsy electric guitar and orchestral-style drums to create a sound that’s earthy, richly layered, and powerful." - Their Website

“At school you didn’t answer to questions about classical authors. You were not interested in participating. You preferred to remember all the epic epithets. You saw beyond the walls of your class. You never remembered your classmates’ names. During school assemblies you used to abstract yourself until you forgot to be alive. The keeper found you standing up alone. It was not cold. In the pockets of your jeans you were keeping chestnut’s leaves and ladybirds.”

JoyCut looks and sounds very attractive on stage. Two drummers sitting face to face and a guy with machines, both a conductor and author in between them. Electronic, post-rock and dark-wave, often experimental but accessible.
